From the start there were a couple of things about the Summerhouse that puzzled us slightly. The first was as a result of something that had been noted by Janet and Scott when they made a return visit to the Summerhouse in order to get some accurate measurements. Scott took a series of compass bearings and came up with something of a puzzle. The angle of the Summerhouse, in terms of the western side was such that its entrance pointed to around 252 degrees. This seemed strange if the Summerhouse had been built as a simple midwinter sun observatory because in Washington DC the Midwinter Sun sets at 240 degrees. We soon worked out how the midwinter sighting did appear from the Summerhouse entrance, using the Peace Memorial as a sighting post, so why had the Summerhouse been built at an angle that did not appear to point to any significant part of the western horizon from a solar point of view?
The Mystery of the Slots

The second puzzle, which had occurred to us from the moment we had first seen the Summerhouse, lay in trying to work out what the slots were for. These occurred either side of each entrance. To say the least they were a strange feature and we had never seen anything quite like them on any other building of the period. Strictly speaking windows of any sort were unnecessary in the Summerhouse, which has an open central roof and large open entrances. At this point Janet had a brainwave and wondered if the slots might have anything to do with tracking, not the sun, but the planet Venus, which had played an important part in our combined research for a very long time. Janet and Scott made this suggestion to Alan, who was immediately put in mind of something he had seen on the other side of the Atlantic, and which seemed to have a parallel with the Summerhouse.
Bryn Celli Ddu
On the Island of Anglesey, just off the north coast of Wales are to be found many Megalithic structures, some dating back as far as 3,000 BCE. One of these is a chambered tomb known as Bryn Celli Ddu. Alan had visited this location on several occasions with the writers and researchers Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas. To cut a long story short the three of them had eventually realized that the main purpose of Bryn Celli Ddu had not been a place to bury the dead, but rather a dark chamber within which the movements of the planet Venus could be viewed and measured when it was an evening star. A reflection of bright Venus was cast onto a polished stone column within the dark chamber, which had a graduated scale, so it had been possible to measure the movement of Venus across a specific period of time. From that point on Chris, Robert and Alan all referred to Brynn Celli Ddu as a 'Venus Chamber'.
The Megalithic Yard
A little background is required at this point in our story. Much of what we now know about the astronomical expertise of our ancient ancestors has come to us by way of a ingenious and meticulous man called Alexander Thom. Thom was, from the end of the Second World War, a Professor of Engineering at Oxford University. As a young man Alexander Thom had been captivated by the stone circles and stone alignments of his native Scotland and since he also had an interest in astronomy, he often wondered whether the purpose of these standing stones had been to track the movement of the sun, moon, planets and stars. Once he was secure in his post at Oxford Thom began to spend much of his spare time carefully surveying and measuring as many of the Megalithic stone structures as he could - literally hundreds of them during the remainder of his long life. His observations were the starting point of the modern study known as astroarchaeology and nobody doubts how important his efforts in this direction were. Perhaps somewhat unfortunately for Alexander Thom himself, his mass of statistics led him to a conclusion that has seen his reputation dragged through the mud - invariably by people who have no real idea what they are talking about. What Thom discovered was that practically all the Megalithic structures he surveyed had been built using a common unit of linear measurement. It was 2.722 feet in length (82.966 cm) and Thom christened it the Megalithic Yard. This observation, though tested and approved by world famous statistical bodies, was laughed out of court by most archaeologists. They wanted to know how such primitive people could have devised an accurate unit of linear measure and then could have kept it absolutely accurate across hundreds of square miles and over two thousand years without it altering in any way?
Enter Chris Knight and Alan Butler
Together with his fellow writer and researcher, Chris Knight, Alan set out to try and vindicate the findings of Alexander Thom, who these days has become little more than a tiny footnote in archaeological history. Alan and Chris checked all the figures they could and were left staggered at the genius of Thom's work, not to mention the man's incredible accuracy in everything he did. As a result they decided to do what they could to find out what the Megalithic Yard really was and how the people who had used it so long ago had managed to get it so accurate in all the structures they created. It was a long and complicated search but eventually they hit gold. The results of their efforts became the best selling book 'Civilization One'.
The Pendulum Principle
It has to be admitted that to explain the wonderful Megalithic measuring system in a condensed way is not easy. The people who had created and used the Megalithic Yard had been in possession of an incredible system of measurements that encompassed not only distance, but also mass, weight and time. As unbelievable as it might seem, the whole system was based on an assessment of the size and mass of the Earth that would not be equalled in accuracy until the 18th century. The Megalithic Yard was just one part of this vast system but a very important one. No standard measure needed to be kept and passed on from site to site or from age to age because it was comparatively easy to recreate the Megalithic Yard wherever it was needed. The first perquisite was the use of the number 366, which figures prominently in the whole Megalithic system of measures. Our ancient ancestors rounded the year up to 366 days and 366 was also the number of degrees in a circle as far as they were concerned. In order to recreate the Megalithic Yard it was first necessary to split the horizon into 366 equal gaps - a very easy thing to do as it turns out. Standing in a circle with 366 divisions the engineers then built a braced wooden frame, like the one shown in the picture which was equal to one of the 366 gaps as seen from the centre of the circle. This frame was angled so that when the planet Venus was setting as an evening star, it would run down the middle of the frame as seen from the centre of the circle. As soon as Venus entered the gap in the frame the engineers would begin to swing a pendulum. They would count the number of beats of the pendulum as Venus passed down the gap and then total up the number of beats that had taken place once Venus disappeared from the gap. It is a fact that if the number of beats equals 366 during the transition of Venus down the gap in the frame, the length of the pendulum MUST be 1/2 of a Megalithic Yard. Readers can take our word for this or else read a fuller explanation in the book Civilization One or review Alan's other websites, which are mentioned at the end of this website. It stands to reason that twice the length of the pendulum would be equal to one full Megalithic Yard and this was the unit of length upon which almost all Megalithic monuments were based.
Things Get Really Strange
For some time Chris and Alan assumed that the Megalithic Yard and in fact the whole Megalithic system of measurements had disappeared from the world as long ago as 2,000 BCE, until by chance we came across a structure in the City of Bath in the South of England that had a significant Megalithic footprint. The structure is known as the King's Circus and is a circle of elegant 18th century houses. King's Circus has exactly the same footprint as Stonehenge and therefore has a circumference of 366 Megalithic Yards. It was designed by a man called John Wood, who we knew had enjoyed an education replete with arcane knowledge and Freemasonic influence. Chris and Alan wanted to know whether this was a strange coincidence or whether some esoteric body, such as the Freemasons, had somehow retained knowledge of the Megalithic Yard and were using it once more. At the time the King's Circus was planned this part of Bath was brand new, so the two researchers cast around for a city that had been completely built in the 18th century and where Freemasonic influence was as strong as they knew it had been in Bath. Quite naturally they turned to Washington DC, which was contemporary in terms of its planning with King's Circus in Bath and where Freemasonry was definitely involved. What they discovered literally blew their minds. It led to the writing of a further book by Chris Knight and Alan, entitled 'Before the Pyramids' and then ultimately to Alan's book 'Washington DC - City of the Goddess'.
The Megalithic Yard and Washington DC
It quite quickly became obvious that not only had the Megalithic Yard been used in the planning and building of Washington DC - everything about the City had been based upon it. When the city had been laid out on paper, gaps between intended structures were planned to be of equal numbers of units that were 366 Megalithic Yards in length. Many of these radiated out from a central point, which is known as the Ellipse and is just south of the White House. The Ellipse itself has a long width of 366 Megalithic Yards. What resulted was a unique and very beautiful pattern, like a complex arrow, which can be seen on the left. We have to stress at this point that there are literally dozens of examples of the 366 Megalithic Yard unit being used in the planning of Washington DC - and in fact still being used up to the present day. This is a story in itself which the reader of this website might want to follow up on. We mention it here because it has an importance to the Summerhouse.
Checking the Megalithic Yard
By a process of elimination, and thanks to the very careful measurements Scott and Janet took on site at the Summerhouse, another incredible realization dawned on us. The slots in the Summerhouse, particularly the ones on the western wall, has been meticulously and specifically created in order to 'check' the length of the Megalithic Yard in almost exactly the same way our Megalithic ancestors must have done. Those involved would wait until Venus was an evening star, around the time of the midwinter solstice. They would occupy one of the seats in the Summerhouse opposite the west facing slots and would swing a pendulum back and forth as Venus passed across the slot on its way towards the horizon. The result they would achieve would be 366 beats for a pendulum of 1/2 Megalithic Yard in length. It has to be stressed that there is no practical reason whatsoever for this exercise in the Summerhouse because in our own day and age maintaining the exact size of the Megalithic Yard is a simple process. This has to mean that if and when the procedure did or does take place, it is part of a ritual and is almost certainly undertaken in order to maintain a tradition that dates back probably 5,000 years. The planning that went into creating the Summerhouse and its slots is obvious because as the image here shows, the design of the Summerhouse is also replete with Freemasonic symbolism. There appears to be no doubt at all concerning what the Summerhouse can do and to prove it absolutely we await an opportunity when Venus is in the correct position in the sky as an evening star, which has not been the case since we made these startling discoveries. The inference is that there is a group of people in Washington DC that understands very well what the Megalithic Yard is and how important it has been to Washington DC. These individuals most probably meet on a regular but somewhat infrequent basis to re-enact a procedure that was first played out in the British Isles and France at the time those enigmatic structures such as Stonehenge were being created. The Southern Summerhouse, had it ever been built, would have served the same purpose but for the period around the midsummer solstice. Therefore only one of the intended two Venus chambers was actually completed. This restricts the number of occasions when the 'ceremony' could take place, perhaps to one year in every eight, at which time Venus reproduces the same patters it made eight years earlier.
Important Related Facts
In the graphic showing the layout of the Summerhouse floor (above) can be seen the six pointed star often known as the 'Seal of Solomon' or the 'Star of David'. It is a device replete with ancient symbolism and mysticism. The Seal of Solomon is a symbol that is important to Freemasonry and as we have repeatedly discovered, even more so to the Venus families. It is likely that the choice of the location where Washington DC was placed owes a significant fact to this most revered of symbols. If one were to draw the points of the solstice rising and setting as in the picture on the left, and also include north and south, the lines can be connected in order to create the Seal of Solomon. This can only happen with regard to a location that has the same latitude as Washington DC. (Roughly 39 degrees North of the Equator.) This realization, made by Scott Wolter is extremely important because it is a symbol that appears time again in association with Washington DC - as in the case of the arrangement of the floor plan of the Summerhouse.
It is also worth noting that the distance from the Summerhouse to the centre of the Pentagon is equal to 15 X 366 Megalithic Yards. Those interested can read 'Before the Pyramids' or 'Washington DC - City of the Goddess' in order to learn just how many measurements across Washington DC are definable in units of 366 Megalithic Yards, which was also a common measurement used in the construction of giant henges and other Megalithic structures in the British Isles as early as 3,000 BC. It is an interesting fact that the Pentagon itself, although only created in the 1940's has dimensions that are directly in scale with these same giant henges, which predate the Pentagon by almost 5,000 years.
The Venus Families and America
Our research continues, with new examples of the use of the Megalithic Yard and other aspects of Megalithic geometry and knowledge now coming to light not simply in Washington DC but in many other places across the United States of America. Some time ago we decided to call the people who have made and continue to make such remarkable happenings possible the Venus Families - predominantly because of their absolute reliance on and veneration for the planet Venus. However, this is only one aspect of their purpose of which there are many others that fill the pages of our latest book: 'America - City of the Goddess'. The influence of the Venus families, both in America and for countless centuries across the globe cannot be overstated. Their connection to Freemasonry is apparent, but in our opinion they are much more than Freemasons. The Venus families are intent on creating a world dedicated to equality and fairness, in which no specific religion or creed could ever be allowed to predominate. 'What' the Venus families believe is enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and in the United States Constitution and some very famous United States citizens have quite definitely been committed to the organization's aims and objectives. At the heart of Venus family belief is the eternal Goddess, who represents the Earth itself. She has many forms and a thousand names. This Great Goddess was revered long before the modern religions ever existed and to some people at least her importance has never diminished. We are proud beyond belief to be sharing in this great adventure and we hope readers of these web pages will choose to get hold of a copy of our latest book and to learn for themselves just how incredible and enduring this story is. To the religiously entrenched these revelations will seem heretical and pagan but if so perhaps they should remember that the Venus families are not looking for and never have sought converts. They lead by example and it has become absolutely obvious to us that their intentions are for a better world, free from tyranny, allowing anyone to believe what they wish but at the same time remaining part of the same great family that humanity ought to be.
